The Difference

Bay windows are a time-tested way to let light shine into your home. They’re an instantly recognisable type of traditional angled windows with three straight sides forming a trapezium-shaped space. You choose which windows you want to be able to open and which ought to be fixed in place.

Bow windows are similar, but come with a more contemporary feel — instead of the windows forming a box, they’re fitted in a smooth semicircle, giving a sleek, sophisticated feel to the right property.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you hang curtains in a bay or bow window?

Bay windows are stylish, but are they practical? What happens when you want to close your curtains?

Of course, fitting curtains for a bay window is a little more complicated than usual, but it is still fairly easy. We can recommend a variety of different designs of curtain rods, which means your curtains can be pulled around the window with no trouble. There are even rods that come in a sweeping arc shape, perfect for bow windows.

How many sides does a bay window have?

A traditional bay window has three sides, which protrude from the wall to form a trapezoid shape. One window faces outwards, and the two others slant at 45-degree angles. This is the popular and iconic style you’ll usually find in Victorian and Edwardian houses in the UK. However, we can also fit box bay windows, which form a rectangular space with side windows at a 95-degree angle. The result is a bright, warm, airy space you can fit furniture into without having to worry about touching the angled sides of a traditional bay window. At Launa, we’re always looking to cater to your preferences and take them on board.

What is the difference between a bay and a bow window?

They’re more similar than they are different — both windows enhance your home’s space and light levels, albeit in different ways and with different shapes and feel. A bay window consists of three individual windows that come together at a point beyond an exterior wall. A bow window, on the other hand, sweeps around in a graceful arc or half-polygon by using an arrangement of four, six or even more windows.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Exeter, Devon, and the surrounding area, including Torquay, Plymouth, Exmouth, Cornwall, Somerset, Newton Abbot, and more.
