Bay and Bow Windows

  • Looking for a way to make more space in your home, brighten up a room or create a centrepiece for future generations to build memories around? Look no further than our bay and bow windows — a classic, stylish and versatile home improvement for almost any home.

We provide our bay and bow windows in various colours and designs, from classic white frames all the way through to picture-perfect wood finishes, alongside a variety of stand-out colours.

Bay windows are a time-tested way to let light shine into your home. They’re an instantly-recognisable type of traditional angled windows with three straight sides forming a trapezium-shaped space. You choose which windows you want to be able to open and which ought to be fixed in place.

Bow windows are similar, but come with a more contemporary feel — instead of the windows forming a box, they’re fitted in a smooth semicircle, giving a sleek, sophisticated feel to the right property.

How do you hang curtains in a bay or bow window?

Bay windows are stylish, but are they practical? What happens when you want to close your curtains?

Of course, fitting curtains for a bay window is a little more complicated than usual, but is still fairly easy. We can recommend a variety of different designs of curtain rod that mean your curtains can be pulled all the way around the window, no trouble. There are even rods that come in a sweeping arc shape, perfect for bow windows.

How many sides does a bay window have?

A traditional bay window has three sides, which protrude from the wall to form a trapezoid shape. One window faces outwards, and the two others slant at 45 degree angles. This is the popular and iconic style you’ll usually find in Victorian and Edwardian houses in the UK. However, we can also fit box bay windows, which form a rectangular space with side windows at a 95 degree angle. The result is a bright, warm, airy space you can fit furniture into without having to worry about touching the angled sides of a traditional bay window. At Launa, we’re always looking to cater to your preferences and take your preferences on board.

Whichever style is right for you and the period of your house, we can create it. If you can’t decide, have a chat with one of our window specialists.

Do bay and bow windows open?

Aside from their style and presence, the practical idea behind bay and bow windows is to give your home enhanced space and light. However, bay windows are deceptively simple by design. We can usually fit them so that any or all of their panels can open.

As a natural consequence of their sleek, sweeping design, bow windows are usually smaller and thinner. Although they will be fitted with sections you can open, it’s unlikely you’ll want to be able to open every single one.

As ever, if you have a specific idea for the design of your bay or bow windows, contact us today! We’re always happy to discuss exciting or innovative ideas with customers.

Do bay or bow windows increase home value?

Well-placed and well-fitted bay and bow windows can certainly increase your home’s value. They give extra light and extra space, and therefore extra interest for the prospective buyer. The added square footage allows for a variety of uses — we’ve seen customers transform their bays into a reading nook, a seating area or a play pod.

Added window space always increases the light levels in the room, regardless of the window’s orientation, and gives you a 180 degree prospect from your property. Although bay windows usually cost more to install than normal windows, we are pleased to have had many happy customers who decided that their benefits outweighed their costs.

What is the difference between a bay and a bow window?

They’re more similar than they are different — both windows enhance your home’s space and light levels, albeit in different ways and with a different shape and feel. A bay window consists of three individual windows that come together at a point beyond an exterior wall. A bow window, on the other hand, sweeps around in a graceful arc or half-polygon by using an arrangement of four, six or even more windows.

As a result, bow windows are often wider than bay windows, which creates their curved effect. If you’re unsure over your preferred make, you can always talk to us to explore your options.

What can I put in a bay window?

You‘ll have the freedom to do almost anything you want with your new space.

We recommend sitting down to think over your options — but here are some ideas:

We’ve always enjoyed bay windows that contain seating that fits into the compartment snugly. Some people like to fit a footrest, an armchair and a coffee table for a perfect reading area, employing the space underneath as storage for books and DVDs or as a bed for a cat or small dog. For a simpler, less design-heavy space, just slide a couple of cosy armchairs into each corner to make a space perfect for a cup of tea on a rainy day!

You can always take a look at our brochure, or talk to one of our experts for more bay window inspiration.
