  • Brighten and open up your home with French doors. They work by creating a clear and easy passage from the house to the garden. Are French doors always double?

French doors bring your home the ideal balance of style and pragmatism. We want to provide you with luxurious contemporary design but this is nothing without practical properties. This is why our French doors are manufactured to the highest quality so you can expect yours to last. To explore the add-ons we provide, contact us today.

If you only have a frame suitable for one door, we offer the alternative of a glazed external door. Like French doors, these bring lots of sunlight indoors.

Why is it called a French door?

French doors have a rich history to them, dating back to the Renaissance period. Although popularised in France at this time, the vision comes from Greek and Italian architecture whose work has influenced the world of design. The architecture of this time was interested in light and how it can be brought into a house’s interior through intricate design.

Traditionally, they opened up to balconies outside. Their glass doors were perfect at giving light and beauty to European properties. Over the years, its popularity spread to all of Europe and today, they remain an extremely popular choice for our customers too. Launa Windows offers these timeless doors in a range of colours and styles if you want to give them your own modern spin.

What is the difference between patio doors and French doors?

Patio doors, more often than not, are made up of sliding doors which contain one or two panels. They work well with homes of differing sizes but are especially popular with smaller houses. Patio doors allow all houses to have that gorgeous transition from the home to the garden, just like French doors.

French doors do not slide but rather open up widely. Made of two doors placed within the same window frame, they open inwards or outwards to give you an unobstructed view of the outdoors. Although both offer easy access to the garden, French doors provide more space to walk through and are perfect for larger spaces. Their size also allows for increased ventilation.

Do I need planning permission for French doors?

You may need planning permission if your home is a listed building, a house in a protected area, or if you plan on having the doors face a road.

Apart from these cases, most French doors do not need planning permission. We work with customers to guide them through the legal components and always install with building regulations in mind. We even have a CERTASS certification which means we are trained in installations that follow all UK regulations and rules.

Do French doors swing in or out?

They can do either, depending on your personal preference. Inwards swinging french doors do not block your path or take up your outside space. Outwards swinging French doors may interfere with anything outdoors, but it frees up indoor space which would have otherwise been taken up by the doors. Consequently, outwards swinging gives the illusion of added space within your home. To talk over the pros and cons of each, and what might be best for you, please get in contact with us where an expert will happily chat with you.

Do French doors increase home value?

Light and space are two huge selling points for potential homeowners. As French doors offer both of these in abundance, your home’s curb appeal will increase upon installing the doors. At Launa, we provide you with French doors that are durable, stylish and functional. Our French doors are made from thermally-toughened glass and use modern, multi-point locks for security, so your home can be a cosy and safe escape from the outside world – just what you need after a busy day at work.

French doors are predominantly glass, so this encourages maximum amounts of light into your home – bringing the outdoors indoors.
