To measure a sash window’s width, measure (within the box frame) from one side of the window to the other, not including the width of the box that the window sits in.

To measure a sash window’s height, include both sashes and measure from the top of the window to the bottom. Again, remain inside the box frame.

To measure your box frame’s height, simply measure from the top of your window frame down to the windowsill.

To measure your box frame’s width, measure the entire window frame from one side to the other.

Consisting of two or more adjacent panels, a sash window works by having (at least) one panel that can move up and down. If a sash window is “single hung”, this means that just one panel can slide vertically. When a sash window slides open, the raised (or lowered) panel remains in place and does not slide back into its casing.
