Looking to maintain your home’s rustic charms while enjoying all the benefits of secure, energy-efficient modern windows? Sash windows have been a staple window design in the UK for centuries, but old-style single-glazed, timber-framed sash windows are high-maintenance and low-insulation — they just don’t perform in comparison to modern technology.

Sash windows have remained popular because they’re attractive, evocative and provide excellent ventilation. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice any of those things to have a modern, hard-wearing and high-performance window.

Are uPVC sash windows any good?

uPVC is known for its durability and versatility, but has never been renowned for its looks. That was then, however, and this is now — a modern uPVC sash window can look almost identical to a classic freshly-painted wooden one, but without the required level of maintenance./span>

uPVC frames also come a lot cheaper than equivalent wooden frames, without a commensurate compromise in quality. Our uPVC sash windows require very little upkeep, will seldom warp, are easy to clean and don’t need an annual lick of paint to keep them looking fresh.

How do you measure a sash window?

To measure a sash window’s width, measure (within the box frame) from one side of the window to the other, not including the width of the box that the window sits in.

To measure a sash window’s height, include both sashes and measure from the top of the window to the bottom. Again, remain inside the box frame.

To measure your box frame’s height, simply measure from the top of your window frame down to the windowsill.

To measure your box frame’s width, measure the entire window frame from one side to the other.

Are uPVC or aluminium windows better?

uPVC is the best pick for those seeking maximum insulation for their home. uPVC is also long-lasting and requires minimal upkeep – simply wipe away any marks that you spot on your uPVC sash window with a damp cloth or soapy water.

Aluminium frames are more expensive than uPVC ones, but it is an incredibly robust, weather-proof and light material. As a result, aluminium frames and sashes can be thinner, giving a larger glass surface area. For those looking to let the maximum amount of light into their homes or who have a particular aesthetic in mind, aluminium sash windows could be the right option.

Can sash windows be double glazed?

Our uPVC sash windows come with double or triple glazing, which helps to keep your home insulated: the layers of glass trap gas between them which prevents cold from penetrating and heat from escaping your home.

uPVC sash windows are a seriously cost-effective option, allowing our customers to fit double glazed sash windows for a reasonable price. They can also come with a wood-grain finish, providing the rustic aesthetic charm of a wooden sash window at a far lower price point.

How does a window sash work?

Consisting of two or more adjacent panels, a sash window works by having (at least) one panel that can move up and down. If a sash window is “single hung”, this means that just one panel can slide vertically. For more air flow into your home, you might prefer a “double hung” sash window, which lets both the top and bottom panels move.

When a sash window slides open, the raised (or lowered) panel remains in place and does not slide back into its casing. They operate on a pulley system, with one window at one end of a cord and a counterweight at the other. This makes them easy to open and ensures your window doesn’t slide or slam shut when you let go of the sash.

Which part of the window is the sash?

A window’s “sash” is the section that holds its glass panes together and in place, that sits within the window’s frame. The design and number of sashes can depend on the type of window: in a double hung window two sashes move up and down, while with a single hung window only one sash may move.

A window sash must be professionally installed and thereafter maintained, otherwise the window can warp over time. Our fitters always work to exacting standards, and will be happy to provide you with information on the correct maintenance of your new frame. Poorly-fitting windows look less attractive, can leak and almost always let draughts in. As time goes on, the damage builds up, eventually causing structural damage to your window frame and reducing the value and insulative properties of your sash window.
